Bordoodle health problems
Owing to the fact that Bordoodles are hybrid dogs, they are likely to inherit the same diseases their parents the Poodle and the Border Collie are predisposed to. Although Bordoodles are generally healthy pups, it is recommended to schedule regular checkups with the dog's vet to catch any health issues early on.
Some of the common health conditions Bordoodles suffer from include the following.
Progressive Retinal atrophy. This disease affects the light-sensitive part at the back of the eye, the retina. It causes the dogs' retina to thin off, then blindness slowly sets in and sadly can happen to dogs as young as one year old. Although dogs will adjust to this condition, it's very sad to imagine since they still have many balls to chase in their lives. So far, there is no medication for this condition.
Hip dysplasia is a condition that may affect some Bordoodles. This is a common condition present in the Border Collie and can sometimes manifest in the Poodles as well. Bordoodles inherit this condition though not always. The problem is as a result of poorly shaped hips. It affects the hips whereby instead of moving in a frictionless direction, they clunk against each other leading to pain. Pain-relieving medication may work for a while to keep the dog on its paws but full treatment can only be achieved through total hip replacement procedure. Keeping the Bordoodle's weight in a healthy range can help to alleviate the unnecessary pressure on the joints. Young Bordoodles should avoid high impact exercises that involve a lot of jumping to help prevent joint problems later in life.
Bordoodles may be susceptible to allergies. This condition manifests with a runny nose and eyes and also itchy skin. The condition can really be irritating to the dog, which causes licking and sometimes even chewing of the skin thus damaging their own skin. Since it's not possible to cure the allergy there are only medications that reduce down the symptoms with fewer effects.
